Crossbow targets
Crossbow targets will help you hone your skill, adjust your crossbow's sites, and keep in practice during the off-season. Standard targets are not appropriate for crossbow bolts, because crossbow bolts are shorter than arrows. They penetrate with the same force as a traditional arrow, but due to the shorter length they will travel deeper into the target. Therefore, specially-made targets are needed for use with crossbows.
Crossbow targets are typically made of high-density foam or carbon material. Don't try to make your own target out of hay bales - the bolt will travel right through and you'll never find it!
If you are going to fire your crossbow near your home, MAKE SURE you have taken sufficient safety precautions. Check the area behind where you will be firing to ensure that no homes, parks, paths or other potentially populated areas exist. Ideally you should also backup your target with a dirt mound several feet high to stop any errant bolts, should you miss the target. Also check local ordinances which may restrict the firing of any weapons if you are within city limits.
If there is an archery range in your town, call ahead to find out whether or not they allow crossbows on their range. Don't be surprised if they do not. Sometimes crossbow hunters will fire their bolts into the hand bow targets, and tear them to shreds trying to retrieve their buried bolts. This turns many ranges away from allowing crossbow users onto their range. Take the time to find out why crossbows aren't allowed on a particular range. Perhaps offering to bring your own target will alleviate any concerns. If that doesn't work, get a bunch of your crossbow-loving buddies to go in with you and start your own crossbow range. Hey - it could happen!
Good luck in your hunt for the best crossbow targets.
