Crossbow hunting

When you get your first crossbow, the urge to go hunt something down and kill it can be pretty strong. Be sure you first take the time to become acquainted with your weapon. Read the owners manual and observe recommended maintenance schedules. Find a safe place to target practice and spend a few hours honing your skills. You'll find that it doesn't take long at all to become an accomplished crossbow shooter.

When you're ready to head out into the field (after taking a hunter safety course, of course), it's best to start out hunting for smaller game like rabbits. You'll find they can be quite difficult to tag, and will provide many exciting hunting excursions for you.

Be sure to check local laws to find out what the regulations are for crossbow hunting in your area - some states are fairly strict about their use. Some animals can only be taken in "season," while many nuisance creatures can be taken anytime. You may need to obtain a license as well, depending on the animals you are hunting. If you are fortunate enough to have a farm, ranch, or large acreage to hunt on, you may not need a license.

Crossbow hunting for small game
This is the perfect place to begin your crossbow hunting career - pursuing small critters like rabbits or large rodents. If squirrels are a nuisance to you, you can try for them, but be prepared to lose a lot of bolts in the trees.

Crows are another great target. You can bait them with a freshly killed animal, like a rodent, and lie in wait for them. Typically there is no season for crows, so you can take them anytime.

Use your imagination - if there is a large population of muskrats in your area, or maybe large, burrowing animals like gophers, they can provide ample shooting opportunities and challenges. The smaller the prey, the harder it is to hit. If you ever bag a gopher you can be mighy proud of the accomplishment.

Turkey make another great quarry. You may need special bolts (or tips) to kill these large, powerful birds.
