Horton’s new lineup of crossbows for 2007 includes an entry-level Steelforce recurve crossbow. Featuring composite construction, the Steelforce is fairly light-weight and a very capable performer

I may be crazy, but I hunt whitetail deer with a Horton Steelforce. I know that the Steelforce is on the low end of performance for hunting whitetail, but it has worked so far. I took a medium sized doe last year. I was using the recommended 17″ arrow and an expanding broadhead that opened to about 1.75″. My shot placement was not perfect - the arrow went through the liver instead of a double-lung. I hit a little higher and a little farther back than I intended. She was probably a bit too close and I should have aimed lower. The arrow did not go all the way through although it did penetrate the layer just under the skin on the opposite side. She bled out after running no more than 30 yards. I am a little concerned about what would happen if I had hit a bone like rib or a shoulder blade.

I would probably like to have a crossbow with more power, but it’s hard for me to pony up the cash. I have found the Steelforce sufficiently accurate. I can lay the shafts in the kill zone at 30-50 yards without much trouble. The trigger pull is pretty hard. You have to get used to it. Obviously correct shot placement is vital.
